  • 7/13/18 thru 7/1518 - I apologize for not making daily updates - this is what happens when you DON'T have internet at the cabin, and go up there to spend a week :)

  • 7/12/18 8:00 pm - Fire at 108,000 acres. 91% Contained.

  • 7/12/18 3:15 pm - All mandatory evacuations have been lifted, and evacuees allowed to return home!

  • 7/8/18 6:00 am - One of our landowners drove Hwy. 160 last night, and reports that while it was open, several fires were active just north of it.

  • 7/5/18 6:00 pm - Fire grows to 103,657 acres.  35% Containment.

  • 7/5/18 9:00 am - Google Earth shows that the northwesternmost point of Eagles Landing is 8.5 miles from the mandatory nearest evacuation line, and 5.25 miles from the nearest pre-evacuation line (these measurements are as the crow flies).

  • 7/5/18 8:30 am - Fire grows to 103,357 acres.  5% Containment.

  • 7/5/18 8:15 am STONEWALL FD UPDATE - the Fire Chief continues to get all updates, planning with the county on what steps may need to be taken.  This week, along with checking all equipment, fire lines have been dug, and other preventative steps are being taken to combat any fire ahead of its growth in this direction.  At this time, over 1200 personnel are supporting the fire effort.

  • 7/4/18 12:00 NOON - Fire grows to 94,000 acres.  5% Containment.  Although the fire remains in Costilla and Huerfano counties, Pre-Evacuations have expanded to parts of Las Animas County.  Most of the fire growth was to the north, north of Silver Mountain.

  • 7/4/18 9:00 am - I didn't do the Stonewall FD Update this morning, allowing them the holiday without me bugging them on their cells.

  • 7/3/18 11:20 am - Fire grows to 78,941 acres.  5% Containment (that's a lessening of the containment, which was 10%).  Fire crews are concerned that, because of high winds, dry tree fuel and the slopes being overtaken, there's a possibility of fire spotting up to a mile away from the line.  Flames have been reported over 300 feet in length.

  • 7/3/18 10:00 am STONEWALL FD UPDATE  - No pre-evac concrns at this time, as fire still maintains its distance.  The fire district is prepping equipment for digging and creating firelines if necessary.  Today, wind is blowing northeast, which works in our favor.  However, there is a possibility of dry lightning - the weather is very much under watch at this time.  Mention was made to remind everyone that Las Animas County is at Stage 2 Fire Preparedness.  A link to the Stage 2 information is at the bottom of this page with the other links (see the Stonewall FD link).

  • 7/3/18 8:00 am - Fire grows to 60,710 acres (unofficial estimate is 75,000 acres).  10% containment.  Fire has crossed Hwy. 12 at the Devil's Stairsteps.  (Note: conflicting reports show that the fire has/has not crossed Hwy. 12).  Fire crews are building defenses around Chucara.  Spring Creek Fire is now recognized at the 4th largest fire in Colorado recorded history.

  • 7/2/18 11:59 pm - Estimates are that 104 homes have been destroyed, all in the Forbes Park Subdivision of Costilla County (west of LaVeta Pass).

  • 7/2/18 6:00 pm - Hwy. 69 is closed from the Huerfano/Custer County Line to Walsenburg.

  • 7/2/18 3:00 pm - Fire has burned 56,820 acres.  10% contained.  Evacuation orders have been issued for Chama, Redwing, Malachite, and Badito.  There are currently 550 firefighters working in two crews.

  • 7/2/18 10:45 am - Fire grows to 56,000 acres.  5% contained.  The majority of movement is in two directions - to the south overthe ridge of Raspberry Mountain, and north of West Indian Creek. The containment perimeter is at the northwest corner of the fire field.

  • 7/2/18 10:00 am STONEWALL FD UPDATE - Fire has made no movement towards Stonewall. The east side of the fire has been slowed by crews working to keep it from going into LaVeta.

  • 7/1/18 6:30 pm - Fire grows to 53,588 acres.  5% containment.  For those who don't know (namely me - I had to look it up), containment means that percentage of the fire perimeter has been beaten back so that fire will not spread past it.

  • 7/1/18 5:30 - Costilla County SD has released that the while arson charges are still pending, the fire was unintentionally started.

  • 7/1/18 10:30 am - update on evacuated homes.  593 in Costilla County; 1483 in Huerfano County.

  • 7/1/18 8:00 am STONEWALL FD UPDATE - Fire has made no move towards Stonewall.  Winds are currently from the Southeast, so no move towards us is expected today.  The main fire line is along Raspberry Mountain Ranch near Cuchara.

  • 6/30/18 9:00 pm - Fire has developed two distinct, developing fire fronts - to the north and south.  The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team has ordered a second such team, increasing the fire fighter presence and public safety assistance.

  • 6/30/18 11:00 am - Fire has been classified as arson, and a suspect is arrested.

  • 6/28/18 11:30 pm - Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is evacuating all patients.

  • 6/28/18 4:00 pm - Fire is estimated at 6140 acres.  0% containment.  Between 80 - 100 firefighters.  Command center officially set up at LaVeta FPD.
